Vila Real de Santo António is a small city located at the far east of the Algarve coast. Nestled between the Atlantic and the Guadiana River, the relatively new city was built under royal decree in 1776.

The District of Vila Real (Portuguese: Distrito de Vila Real [ˈvilɐ ʁiˈal] ⓘ) is a district of northern Portugal. With an area of 4,239 km 2 (1,637 sq mi), the district is located east of the port city of Porto and north of the Douro River .

The climate of Vila Real can be described as transitional Mediterranean. In fact, winter is a bit colder than in the Mediterranean climate, while summer nights are often cool. The city is located in northern Portugal, 85 km (53 mi) from the coast, and at an altitude of 450 meters (1,450 ft).

Vila Real is an old city with stately houses, a Gothic cathedral and a waterfront avenue. It is located on the confluence of two rivers and surrounded by mountains, and hosts the Pucarinhos Market in June.
